In her Andesen’s biography, Signe Toksvig has the following caption under this photo:
Photograph 1875, showing a montage of a photograph of little Charlotte Melchior with a stuffed stork, inserted behind Andersen’s right knee. Given to H. C. Andersen as a present on his 70th birthday. Photograph by Elfelt.I thank Ann Mette Heindorff for translating the caption from Danish, and for supplying the following information:
Elfelt was a photographer appointed to the Royal Danish Court. His daughter, Annelise, later married a relative of the royal family, Prince Waldemar zu Schaumburg-Lippe. The couple had a daughter, Princess Eleonora. But the marriage was unhappy, and Annelise committed suicide about 15 years ago at the age of 40.See also a different monntage of the same portrait.
