Notes:

• The stamps where issued in Israel to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the death of Hans Christian Andersen, “The King of Tales.” They are based on original illustrations to Andersen’s fairy tales, made by Samuel Katz, an artist member of Kibbutz Evron.
  • The 1.20 NIS stamp depicts the Little Mermaid in love, gazing at the palace, where the prince lives.
  • The 1.90 NIS stamp depicts the pair of crooked tailors dressing the foolish king with the special garments they had sewn.
  • The 2.30 NIS stamp shows the Ugly Duckling (who some say, is H. C. Andersen) undergoing meticulous scrutiny by his friends.
  • The First Day Cover is a collage of characters from Andersen’s Fairy Tales: The Emperor of China, The foolish king, the soldier, the witch and the dog from the “Tinder Box,” the Little Mermaid, the Ugly Duckling, the real and mechanical Nightingales.
• The illustrations first appeared in the book Nine Fairy Tales (in Hebrew: Tesha Agadot), by Hans Christian Andersen, translated by Shmuel Shnitzer, illustrated by Shmuel Katz, Sifriat Maariv, Tel Aviv, 1984.
• The special cancellation on the First Day Cover was done in the city of Bat Yam, literally Daughter of the Sea, or Mermaid.
